Scam Alert:
A few years back, my brother bought some bitcoin from Coinbase Pro. Today, he finally wanted to take it off to a wallet. (Yay!)
I wasn’t watching as he typed in coinbasepro.com and was taken to a scam webpage that looked exactly like the Coinbase front page.
•That URL is not an address owned or used by Coinbase! Please be careful!•
His password obviously “didn’t work” and the page instructed him to call a number for phone support.
The scammer got him to log in to his account and was trying to get him to transfer his bitcoin to another wallet before I realized what was happening and said, “Bullshit, log out!”
The guy in the phone started to try to talk him out of logging off, but he did as I said, and the guy on the phone hung up on us.
We then took steps to secure his coin. Tomorrow we meet again to lock down his custody and backups.
Happy ending (this time) and a valuable lesson (for us). But what about the next victim, the next time?
