Great question, and there are quite a few answers. Low energy and easily-made alternative-computing is definitely an active research area (often at fancy universities) covering both screens and digital logic.
There are FPGAs aimed at minimal size, cost, power consumption (while having reprogrammability/updatability), and so I think once we have our nice FPGA lispms, we can scale them down, not up and use salvage with DVI network PS/2 asics
