You are correct; that's a classic definition of socialism. But what's important for socialism to work is that the means of production are not owned by private individuals and that the earned surplus is distributed to a broad class of workers. Ironically, capitalism and socialism can have a symbiotic relationship. Capitalism can and should work responsibly and sustainably by taking care of it's workers and not by taking care of private individuals owners who are not workers.
