Duolingo seems to be based on the theory that adult learners also learn languages better this way, at least at first. It definitely requires turning off the part of your brain that has been inculturated into expecting things like explanations of grammar rules and tables of endings. Personally, I found it very effective for learning grammar rules/endings etc. (in Spanish) in a way that I actually retained, even though it sometimes felt frustrating in the moment.
