While Zionist violence has been raining down on Gaza for more than eight months, and the occupying forces are stepping up their murderous assault on Rafah, the international community remains silent and complicit. As a result of this colonial war, more than 43,000 people have been martyred since October 7, including at least 15,000 children and 10,000 women. We, students from various universities and CEGEPs, refuse to remain silent in the face of these colonial crimes.
The student intifada is just beginning.
Launched at Columbia University, a combative student movement of unprecedented scope is shaking up universities around the world, especially in North America and Europe. The wave of occupations now reaches more than 145 universities. On April 27, 2024, this wave of solidarity and liberation spread as far as Tiohtià:ke (Montreal) with the establishment of a liberated zone at McGill University, supported by the student communities of Concordia University, Université de Montréal and UQAM. Since then, ten other camps have been set up on Canadian university campuses. There is now one more. Al-Aqsa People's University at UQAM
Today, in solidarity with the struggle of our comrades at McGill and in the face of the administration's continued refusal to respond favorably to their demands, we are expanding this movement and creating a new liberated zone on the island of Tiohtià:ke.
Student activists at the UQAM camp have chosen to name it the Université populaire Al-Aqsa de l’UQAM (Al-Aqsa People's University at UQAM in English) in tribute to one of the 12 universities in the Gaza Strip destroyed by Israel's “scholasticide” — the organized and systematic destruction of the Palestinian education and university system. Three presidents and nearly a hundred professors and provosts were killed in the most recent Zionist attacks. According to the UN, the majority of all school and academic infrastructures in the enclave had been damaged or completely destroyed by the beginning of January.
We rise up in international solidarity with the Palestinian people and in support of our comrades who, like us, refuse passivity and choose struggle. The states that govern us and the institutions that claim to represent us have blood on their hands. To force the Israeli government to stop its genocidal war, the state of Quebec must cease all forms of collaboration. Universities the world over must break their agreements with complicit Israeli institutions and stop funding the colonization of Palestine.
