The age of the "nuclear family unit" (was that an American thing? when was that, the 70s or 80s? 🤔) did away with multigenerational family structures in society and living arrangements as an adulthood goal. I think a lot of mixed immigrant-generation families are still flexible about that, but there are pros and cons.
On one hand, "it takes a village" (e.g. the Hmong community here has a ton of extended family support), but on the other hand, according to my Hmong friends, cultural expectations generally trend conservative because the older generations have such a significant say in raising the younger generations and value "tradition." 🤔
