yah I totally agree that their technique is pretty questionable and I think its more for stage combat entertainment than having any historical basis.
to be fair though, there is no written treatise on the use of heater shields so we don’t actually know how they were wielded with alongside a sword. when I train with the larger shield at my HEMA club a lot of what my instructor is teaching me is extrapolated from the way they were used in art.
