Danmei is a genre of books that can be anything, as long as the main couple is both men (or man-shaped, I guess, in the case of some danmei with animal turned people, AI, and others). It can run the gamut of extreme non-consensual sex to consensual sex. In the case of most translated danmei, they originate as serialized web novels.
So it's not quite true that danmei fantasy is very reflective of Chinese fantasy in general. They are not considered serious literary readings, fyi (and this is not meant as a criticism at all - i happen to enjoy reading danmei a lot)
