The Labour party had a similar "collapse" in the 1980's (Thatcher) and had gone a bit "nutty" to the extent that some in that party claimed they lost because they were "not left enough". There were splits (the "gang of four" forming the SDP) and recriminations before labour ejected the "militants" and became credible again.
