In Germany there are two different value added tax (VAT) rates. The regular rate is 19%. A reduced rate of 7% applies to "basic food items," which currently includes fruit, veg, grains, legumes, but also meat, fish, cheese, and butter. #Vegan substitutes like plant milk, fake meat, etc. have the regular rate applied to them, which makes them more expensive. The party "Die Linke" is now asking the government to reconsider this system.
