The original source for Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty, or give me death!" speech is a reconstruction by his biographer William Wirt, published in 1817. Henry delivered the speech on March 23, 1775, at the Second Virginia Convention in Richmond, Virginia. The authenticity of Wirt's reconstruction has been questioned, as it was based on interviews with eyewitnesses and secondary sources over forty years after the speech was give.
