It’s also partly historical: legacy of Empire means that unmodified “Asia” tends to mean “Indian Subcontinent” here. Everyone knows they’re not talking about China.
(This is why Sikhs and, to a lesser extent, Hindus get particularly annoyed by “Asian grooming gangs”: as well as the fact that their daughters were also targeted, they are also “Asian” in the UK sense.)
