#BestVidyaGirlContest 2024 Post-Tournament Analysis (2025 Tournament Preview)
So Samus ended up becoming the first girl to win a major Fedi Waifu Tournament twice, and she went 2 for 2 at that, accumulating a perfect 10-0 win-loss record. At this point there is NOTHING left for the Metroid heroine to prove, at least in 2024 I thought that maybe she’d suffer due to underdog voting as well as people anti-voting the reigning champion, but in fact, her second title came even easier than her first. And in 2025, where she’d also also be benefiting from Metroid Prime 4 hype? Forget about it! Samus is officially being retired from the main tournament, effectively becoming a post-game Superboss instead: After the main tournament is over, the 2025 BestVidyaGirlContest winner will challenge Samus for the title of Grand Champion. This is a separate title, so it’s not like our new vidya girl contest champion will be putting her hard-won championship on the line, she’ll just be getting a chance to claim a second title and (perhaps even more importantly) the opportunity to become the first vidya girl ever to defeat Samus.
As for the main 2025 tournament, it will take place sometime during autumn. It will be pretty similar to this latest season, but with no special Touhou Qualifier (the toe hoes will instead fight it out with all the other girls), and also with slightly fewer pre-qualified girls just to spice things up. In fact, there will only be 6 pre-qualified Top Seeds, and they will be the following:
#1 Seed: Zelda (Legend of Zelda series)
#2 Seed: Pyra (Xenoblade 2)
#3 Seed: Fio Germi (Metal Slug)
#4 Seed: Misty (Pokemon)
#5 Seed: Etna (Disgaea)
#6 Seed: Tifa (Final Fantasy VII)
These are *mostly* the 6 best-performing girls from the latest tournament, with a few modifications: The Samus-Zelda match is pretty much ignored for extrapolation purposes, since it would lead to ONLY girls from Samus’s half of the bracket being represented, and I just don’t think that’s fair or accurate. As I mentioned in my writeup, I simply think Samus put in the performance of a lifetime against Zelda, from whom Samus is like Kryptonite. Overall, I still think Zelda was easily the second most important girl of the 2024, and with Samus gone she deserves the coveted #1 Seed.
Pyra was a no-brainer for the #2 Seed, and in terms of pure extrapolated strength she’d actually qualify as the top girl, but I’ve already explained why I didn’t go with that metric. The #3 and #4 Seeds are Fio Germi and Misty, two girls who were both pretty close to Zelda in terms of strength. Now, my #5 Seed is a really cheeky one – but purely based on results, Etna truly DOES end up looking like an Elite girl! How can I *not* take this rare opportunity to make Etna a top seed, when she undeniably earned it? Yeah, it’s easy to assume that her match with Samus was a total fluke – but what if it wasn’t? I think it’s only fair to give Etna a chance to prove herself in much more favorable circumstances.
Rounding out the Top Seeds is Tifa as our #6 Seed – the Final Fantasy VII girl has experienced quite a change in fortune, and is now arguably where she deserved to be all along. And again, just like Etna she’s genuinely worthy of the spot, given her respectable performance against Samus. Will Season 3 of the Best Vidya Girl Contest be the time when Tifa finally makes a deep run?
I’m quite happy with this Top 6, tho there is one very obvious snub: Malon
My reasons for not making her a pre-qualified top seed are twofold: I didn’t want multiple girls from the same franchise in the top 6 (in which case Zelda is the more deserving Zelda rep), and I wanted to *somewhat* limit the Nintendo overrepresentation. I think Zelda, Pyra and Misty are the perfect Nintendo reps, and by claiming half of the top 6, you still get a fair acknowledgement of this season’s NintenDomination without making it TOO excessive. And of course Malon will, along with the likes of Tamamo, 2B, the Touhou girls etc, still have plenty of chances to qualify for the 2025 tournament once the Nomination Thread is posted.
Again, I’m happy with my picks, and by reducing the number of pre-qualified top seeds (as well as by having a real wild card like Etna seeded so highly) I’m hoping to ensure that round 1 in the upcoming tournament becomes a lot more interesting than it was during the 2024 tournament. Though of course, what with this being our first tournament without Samus, I’m thinking we’re in for plenty of excitement regardless.
