Attention Beige Party-goers!
Just wanted to give an update on our recent poll about federating with Meta. This has become less theoretical now that it seems like the launch of threads.net is imminent. Since this is a new instance and nobody is following anyone there yet, I have preemptively defederated from it. My main concern here is that the primary purpose of any instance run by Meta is going to be collecting data from its users and potentially anyone that interacts with them. I've had enough people express concerns to me about this that I'm shutting the door on that before it can be opened.
As for any instances that are formally collaborating with Meta, I am going to take a wait and see approach. I don't want to just insta-block an instance that might have accounts that people on this instance are following. If it turns out that these instances are being used as avenues for data mining then I will move to defederate, but I will at least put it up for discussion before I take any action.
I didn't sign the pledge because I am more concerned about the actual experience of my users than taking a particular ideological stance, and I want to be free to make decisions based what will result in the best outcomes for my users, to whom I am ultimately answerable.
If any of this is a deal-breaker for anyone, please let me know and we can discuss it further. I know not everyone is going to agree on everything, but if possible I want to strike a balance that we can all at least live with.
