Today I realized that Ruby Bridges and my mom are the same age (68).
I knew that Ruby Bridges was younger than many people realize. That the civil rights movement was not that long ago!
I also knew my mom lived through desegregation. She remembers riots at her high school in Fort Wayne, Indiana, when they closed the majority-minority school and starting bussing those kids to the other buildings.
I just had not made the connection before that they are literally the same age.
