One thing I disagree is the idea that driving without fastening one’s seat belt is considered illegal. Furthermore, if we drive a car that has no seat belts, that’s also illegal too.
Those who personally know me might find it strange that I disagree with this idea because I personally fasten my seat belt everytime I drive my car, even if it’s only a 1-mile drive.
Why then do I disagree with something I personally do?
Because this idea is telling us, “Even if what you’re doing poses no harm to others (only to yourself), but we, the government, know what’s good for you. So, you need to do what we tell you to do.”
If we accept the ‘principle’ behind this kind of law, we’re giving the government the power to order us to do things that are ‘bad for us (but cause no harm to others)’.
This means that one day, the government might make junk food illegal. One day, the government might ban us from using our phones more than 5 hours a day. One day, the government might make horoscope illegal.
The people in government might, one day, become tyrants.
This is why it’s important for us, the people, to draw the line and do not allow the government, with its ‘good intentions’, to pass laws that might ‘cross the line’.
