There is a world of difference between a healthy economy where occasional failing businesses are pruned out, and a broken economy where perfectly viable businesses are stressed to the point of failure by poor government policy. That situation can lead to a cascade of bad debt infecting whole sectors of the economy. I think we’re very close to that point, possibly only being avoided by HMRC being unusually flexible about PAYE and VAT.
