Do I think Satoshi's coins are lost or gone forever? No. For starters, I don't think SATOSHI was one person. Secondly, this person or people were too sharp to do the ultimate rookie-stupid mistake and lose the coins. I certainly dont think they would waste, or throw out the coins. This was their work. This was their craft. This was their project. This entity of "Satoshi" understood the most advanced economic and psychological game theory possible. They just didn't lose coins. It does not make sense, using any basic logic.
So, what do I think The Satoshi coins are doing ? I think they are there for a sort of protective reserve for the network's defense, should they ever be needed. For certain types of large economic based attacks, or accidents, that many coins would be a massive force. I think, that if at a certain time, the coins were not ever deemed to be a protective reserve asset, then they would be sent out to the network in some beneficial way.
Do I think we will eventually find out who Satoshi was ? Yes.
