President Alberto Fernández's Economy Minister, Martín Guimarães, told an audience of US conservatives that he wants to be the first to sign a free-trade deal with US President Donald Trump. However, he warned that Argentina is 'restricted' by its membership in the Mercosur trading bloc. Guimarães made the comments during a meeting with the conservative think tank, the Heritage Foundation, in Washington D.C. He emphasized that Argentina is committed to free trade and is willing to negotiate a bilateral agreement with the US, but acknowledged that Mercosur's rules and regulations would need to be taken into account. The Mercosur bloc, which includes Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, has a common external tariff and trade policy, which could complicate negotiations with the US. Guimarães also expressed his support for the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), saying that it is a 'good' trade deal and that Argentina would like to see similar agreements with other countries.
