I see BSky and NOSTR as opposite extremes of bad development. NOSTR is radical inefficient chaos where nothing ever progresses much because no one is working together. I've been on NOSTR for 2 years or so, and aside from one big leap when good clients first started appearing, nothing has changed. It's still a very aggravating protocol to use. The content of the difficulty is slightly different, the particular landscape of clients have changed a bit, but still, nothing works particularly well and no one cares, devs are all just busy on their pet projects.
BSky, on the other hand, is so overly engineered that in practice it ceases to be a useful model for self hosting at all. It will always be the one main server and maybe a few enthusiasts on the side.
Mastodon and its siblings have had nowhere near the funding and, aside from the fiefdom problem inherent to its hosting model, it's much farther along than either one. They're a good middle ground. NOSTR devs should collaborate more like they do, then they might not even need all these grants.
