I mean, the IT world runs on VMs. I can say that I run huge, high IOPs/throughput workloads on VMs, so virtualization wouldn't be the bottleneck, unless the backend infrastructure just suck of the VMs are misconfigured.
You should be able to get on your VMs and see if you've got high storage latency (ie: more than a few ms), high CPU util, CPU I/O waits, memory utilization issues or whatever.
Sorry, not trying to be a pest, this is just fun to talk about.
