I think many normies will use Nostr indirectly, meaning they won't hold a private key and probably won't even know it exists. A company could hold private keys and attach ownership to an email and password just like legacy platforms do now.

This sort of model is one I would consider if I were Facebook (etc) and wanted to stay relevant. For one, it would more or less free them from the threat of government. "So sorry, senator, all we can really do is hide them in our client, at which point people can just use another client 🤷." I doubt most companies care as much as they claim to in the interest of avoiding the stick.

This could also allow companies to capitalize on the benefits users get from Nostr without forcing people to learn an entirely new protocol and leave their platform as a result. Facebook could theoretically do this today without even telling users.

Basically, one outcome could be that the major social media companies just become competing front ends/relays for the new social protocol. I don't see another option if more people start falling into this rabbit hole. I think their days are numbered.
