Cultural consensus on movies is a weird thing. Here's an example: I spent 6 months in Taiwan in the pre-internet era. We were cut off from most English language news. A new Tom Hanks movie came out, and all the Americans I knew in Taipei went to see it and LOVED it. That movie was Joe vs. The Volcano. I was stunned to come home and find that movie was a punchline because as far as I knew, it was a beloved comedy.
