Personal anecdotes...

When I hung out with the Pagan community (which is very diverse) it was the same. We'd have large festivals and the vendors would leave their wares unattended at the end of each day. Nothing was ever stolen. It's one of the upshots of having very few degrees of separation with your community members.

In the summer I decided to walk into town to buy myself a bicycle. I got a bit lost along the way down some back country roads, and stopped for directions at some random dude's house. He was busy doing some work, but about 15 minutes later he drove past me on the road in his pickup, specifically to give me a lift into town himself.

A couple weeks ago I was ploughing snow with the tractor and misjudged where the edge of the road was and ended up almost tipping the thing over into the ditch. The very first guy who drove past saw what happened and immediately stopped to give me a tow out of the ditch with his pickup.

Conversely, while you can trust your neighbours to be honest and help random strangers in such communities, you typically can't trust your reputation, since gossip mongering and slander seems to run rampant. When everyone knows everyone, and has an opinion about everyone, a lot of the time they have nothing better to do that talk shit about each other. It's a double edged sword.
