Die Externsteine are formed from sandstone laid down during the early Creataceous ~100mya. By about 70mya the layers had folded so they became vertical. The outcrop weathered into 13 pillars, now at the edge of an artificial pond (📷1). Many have beeen reshaped & bridged so tourists can traipse all over them (📷2&3). Carving also served religious purposes; the Kreuzabnahmerelief (📷4) is a 12th C. depiction of the “Descent from the Cross.”
