The M in Meritocracy stands for Money. Though I’m white, I grew up poor. I never had as much opportunity as my wealthy friends. I know I’ve had plenty of easier opportunities in my life than my Black friends and colleagues. I’m not pretending I had/have it as hard as they do. But I definitely had to work harder because I didn’t have money or a name attached to money.
