Matrix/Element going to AGPL is good (it is the license most despised by BigTech, treated like kryptonite), but CLAs are not good.
CLAs mean that the system can eventually go fully closed after VC exit, even if it is presently AGPL licensed. So this latest announcement is a warning. Some other company could in future buy the software and then close it.

I am moving to Conduit on the backend, because it's simpler to deploy and maintain and I don't care about having trendy features. I am also generally more wary about #Matrix because of this announcement and its for-profit orientation, and I'm tending to prefer #XMPP for instant messaging.
