#gmail was launched 20 years ago today. Many people still don’t understand the reason it exists. Scanning your email and serving you ads is not it. Gmail is the world’s best spam filter. Spam is a form of advertising and a competitor to Google’s ad business. By making spam less useful they make it less valuable and redirect more advertising money to themselves.
