It's the whole "sins of the fathers" thing. Once the cycle starts....the children's destiny is almost inevitable. Very difficult to break the cycle.
I know a girl (high functioning, successful) who was abused as a child, lost her mother at 5 and was raised by grandma and an uncle.
Married - then divorced.
Ended up marrying the minister of the church!!! (he's 65 and she's 30).
A broken human. (both of them)
