Brilliant Canberra weather for today's Memory Jog, the annual fundraiser for Dementia Australia.
I didn't know much about dementia until I had to. The Wicking Centre at the University of Tasmania runs excellent online courses when dementia does barge its way into your family's life.
Good for understanding dementia not as some sort inevitable forgetfulness that one might expect comes with old age, but a distinct disease process and terminal illness.
I drew a cartoon trying to capture how it overwhelms coping strategies in the early stages, to leave a person increasingly lost in a confusing maze of memories. But that's still too gentle - that bird will eventually peck out the brain processes that control your physical functions too.
It's a terrible disease, made worse by fear and lack of understanding, which can increase a person's isolation.
