I was today years old when I learned that you can rotate sprites by doing three shears, and that this is non-destructive and preserves all pixels, so you can do it repeatedly, and get no blur, nor disappearing or doubled pixels. It also wraps around the edges, so the resulting image is never bigger than the original one. And it tiles.
