I had to use a different chipset to have an unscrewable antenna for my pi wireless gateway and wireless bridge using directional antennas. However, it's unfortunate that the onboard wireless will likely never work.

I've gotten into the habit of only getting hardware I know is FreeBSD supported unless I have use cases where it won't work because if it works on FreeBSD, Linux, Mac, and Windows are likely well supported as well.
