Whenever I visit my parents in the Swabia region of Germany, I bring back a pack of heirloom lentils. These are a varietal of Puy lentils that needs to be co-planted with oats to support the plants and are grown on rocky, chalky soils, with low yields. Lentils form the basis of the traditional Swabian poor people's meal of "Linsen und Spätzle mit Saitenwürstle," lentil stew with handmade egg noodles/dumplings and Vienna sausage.
