Exactly, they are not with us, so humans interpret the verses in those books. Even if the books were perfectly preserved, that has no impact on whether the contents are true, if I have a perfectly preserved 2000 year old book that says "2+2 is 5", that doesn't mean it's true.
Regarding references:
"Men are above women" & "Husbands can beat their wives" = Quran 4:34
"Child rape is legal" = Aisha (the youngest wife) was 9 at the time of consummation (rape)
"Rape of female slaves" = Quran 4:24
"Apostates should be killed" = Quran 4:89 - which might explain why many muslim majority countries punish apostasy with death or imprisonment - see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostasy_in_Islam_by_country#/media/File%3AApostasy_laws_world_map.svg
I base my value judgements on my opinions yes, they are of course heavily influenced by the culture and time I grew up in and are subject to change if I encounter new information or convincing arguments.
Let me ask you a question: Is slavery good or bad? (hint: if you have to look it up in your holy book of choice, you are morally corrupt).
