Or they let the organization change so much that they got fired. I used to work in an office job with a director who had a "old fashioned" reputation. Called women nicknames, criticized interns a little too harshly. But he knew how to play the game, so after he beat cancer he leaned heavily on ADA accommodations and would make his own complaints about discrimination so they'd be too afraid to fire him. That, and the place wouldn't work without him, even if he was a jerk.

So they made a new position, above him, and put a black woman in it. He went on paid medical leave and as far as I know he never came back.
