I was doing DEI work in 2016.
A self-taught, Puerto Rican, first-gen knowledge worker, I was hired as part of a team whose job was to rehabilitate GitHub's ability to win and retain talent in a historically competitive market. Its people missteps had been so pronounced and so public, they effectively blew a hole in the side of a unicorn.
And in that context, with Obama in power, you couldn't legitimately wield power without it being inclusive and equitable.
This was the alignment of power.
