I wrote one of the very first fully working examples of the interlibrary metadata exchange systems for libraries here in the UK... it was based on directories and it worked beautifully!
Sadly I did it within 6 months of a ten year funding stream and it upset a lot of people!
The published papers still exist, but the goalposts were moved to ensure the continuance of funding and my project shelved.
