I usually enjoy seeing other people rank stuff, #lists, but I always cringe when someone asks me ‘what is my favorite this or that’. Favorite band? No idea. Favorite movie? Don’t have one. Favorite food? Whatever I’m eating at the moment. But this question I found I could actually answer with some level of meaning. There is still room for changes and reordering, but for the most part I think I answered it as well as I could. #music #influence
What are the top ten albums (CDs, records, or in whatever format you listened) that shaped your overall musical preferences today?
There are, of course, so many, but I think I was able to identify the list and roughly order it. I’ll start by cheating with the ‘Honorable Mentions’ that did not make the top ten. Again these are just 'honorable mentions". They are:
Pearl Jam – Ten
Alice In Chains – Dirt
Rage Against the Machine – Rage Against the Machine
Tool - Aenima
White Zombie – La Sexercisto, Devil Music Vol. 1
The Shipping News – Save Everything
Pink Floyd – The Wall
The Clash – The Clash
The Cardigans – Life
Operation Ivy – Operation Ivy

So many of these could have made the top ten as I spent many hours listening to each individually. Each of them had a large impact on my tastes but the more I though about them, they either faded from memory over time or were an extension of another album or similar artist that came before it, or that led to another more influential release.
The albums in my top ten are truly defining to me in some way emotionally and/or stylistically, and, while I can appreciate them differently than I did thirty years ago, I can listen to them in full with the same reverence and awe as I did the first four hundred times I heard them. (Except for #4. What is it?)
