Sure, but this is proof of concept tech, not an actual instance (the instance they're running is just a demo).
So I'd say, as far as running an instance at large scale, yes, moderation is fundamental. But that goes for any instance above 500 ppl I'd say.
But as far as the beginnings of a new platform, unless specifically precluded as a possibility (and unless I'm missing something), moderation is naturally a somewhat separate concern.
