Something else that I've noticed: If I attempt to shut down the VM cleanly in this state, I get a blank stare out of VMWare player and my hypervisor walking directly into the sun.
I have to pause the VM, then make VMware ditch the state rather than telling it to just pull the plug. Something is weirdly broken.
