I'm on the Ubuntu security announcements mailing list, so I can assure you that Canonical is increasingly monetizing open source by restricting security updates for some packages in currently supported Ubuntu versions to 'Ubuntu Pro' subscribers (I haven't looked into source availability for them, I'm sure Canonical obeys the letter of the GPL).
Red Hat is not a unique actor. It's going to get worse everywhere.
