I don't think #mastodon is going to be mainstream. Maybe it's creators don't want it to be. The #fediverse, while it may make mastodon more resilient, does nothing to prevent the ever more extreme concentrations of viewpoints that are self reinforcing. In fact, defederating promotes it. Day by day I see mastodon become more singular and dominated by a few clusters of posters. This is reinforced by the same responders, forming a cycle of promotion. Mastodon is easy to manipulate.
