One can probably do some math taking into account the number of events a single person in the world generates per day, the required throughput of the network per second and hence a relay speed per vCPU. This should give us the idea of how many relays and at what cost would one need to operate for global comms network. I suspect that this is going to be a higher number than the number of relays that comfortably allows everyone to discover each other. But then… paid relays will probably consolidate and have larger throughputs than hobby operations
