My three year old nephew is the sweetest, happiest kid I’ve ever known. His smile lights up the room. He’s also definitely on the spectrum.
He’s very much in his own world doing his own thing (guess which one he is in the picture). He spent yesterday playing with his first present and no others. People kept handing him new presents, but he knew what he wanted to do. He loves repeating phrases over and over. When he was tired he lay down on the couch and spent an hour watching a little colored light spinning.
How do we celebrate his independent spirit and preserve that happiness? I’m worried that as he gets older he’s going to get more and more pressure to be like the other kids. I see lots of folks here talking about how their anxiety and CPTSD comes from society trying to force them to conform. I don’t want that to happen to him.
