In a metropolitan area not far from my hometown a homeless veteran froze to death over night. I didn't grow up in a place that is used to seeing sub-freezing temps. This man was also the mind and heart behind a local charity that offers haircuts and other hygiene help to the homeless or near homeless in the area. He was a community hero and he passed away in the streets because he didn't have anywhere to be warm.
This same city is home to one of the largest Pentecostal churches in the country. (Along with several other megachurches with nearly college-sized campuses.) None of them opened their doors for those in need. None of them offered extra blankets, socks, hot hands pouches, gloves, hats, scarves, etc.
Things like this are why I left religion. Things like this are why I scoff when I hear people claim to be "a good Christian".
There was a song I was taught as a child that said "I'm trying to be like Jesus. I'm following in his way. I'm trying to live as he did, in all that I do and say" but I don't see a whole helluva lot of his "followers" doing that these days.
