Parallel cards appear to be optional slight alterations on the main game cards that you can toggle on the main menu. They're not all strict improvements, but it's hard to think of a time where you would consider playing Astral Ruler and that extra effect NOT be what you want. (If you can afford to pay 3 for that, you probably have the 3 cost engine running, a bit less damage is whatever)
