Okay. Well, Wayland *in and of itself* is not so bad -- the protocol, I mean. As a bit of middleware, it's perfectly serviceable.
Where I think they lost the plot was in cutting the X11 protocol out of the picture, and making UI toolkits talk to the Wayland compositor directly. That has wasted countless programmer hours updating every UI kit, most of which still don't do as good a job on Wayland as they did on X11.
