Damage caused to the #Chernobyl confinement by #Russia drone on the night 13/14 February 2025. The explosion did not cause any radiation release but damaged the roof of the New Safe Confinement which was completed in 2016 with massive international support. Remains of Russian “Geran-2” were found in the rubble. The primary purpose of the confinement is to prevent rainwater ingress into the ruins, causing corrosion and weathering and prevent any radioactive dust release as result of movement of the damaged concrete elements. The confinement looks like a simple roof, but it’s actually air conditioned inside so the Russian drone did breach the climate control mechanism.
