I can't see the infinity symbol as harmless. I see the statement all the time "it means autism is infinite", even if different people phrase it in different ways. Even when people just say "autism is a spectrum", they have about as much understanding of what that statement does or should mean as "it's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes" (Idiocracy, if you haven't seen it).
Some statements or implications are true on a *technicality*, but are reaaaally easy to make harmful assumptions about. And the infinity rainbow and "autism is a [infinite] spectrum" are two of them, and huge pet peeves of mine.
If I didn't learn so much about autism (and especially my own symptoms) due to introspection and rational filtering, I'd have improved myself a whole lot less.
(By the way, because of this, I partially know why autistic people don't look at faces, and that's a pretty interesting convo to have. And yeah, I know some autistic people are probably fine looking at faces, but you know what I mean ^^ )
