Although I think for the sake of fairness I should also mention how about five years before this is was referred to a specialist who diagnosed me with bipolar instead, and put me on lots of drugs that damaged my health.
So really the key part was that I had already self-diagnosed, and could manage my encounter with the system in a far better way.
